Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann - An Egyptian Jar Seller at Gizeh - 1876-78

"An Egyptian Jar Seller at Gizeh" by Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann, painted between 1876 and 1878, centers on a young woman selling pottery. This work is a direct result of Jerichau Baumann's extensive travels to the Middle East in 1869-70 and 1874-75, during which she made extensive observations and sketches of Egyptian life and culture.

Typical of the period's Danish art, the painting is characterized by its international motif. However, the colours indicate a strong personal style. The intense blue of the sky and the glowing heat of the sun against the red pot, along with the white fabric on the seller's head, create a dramatic interplay of strong, vivid colours. Despite her Polish-German background, Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann spent most of her career in Denmark and is considered one of the most important Danish artists of the 1800s. This painting was acquired by the Royal Picture Gallery (the later SMK) in 1892 and proved instrumental in fostering a growing interest in Orientalism within the museum's collection.
