Caspar David Friedrich - Der Abend - 1821
The painting depicts a bright pine forest filling the entire space. The forest floor, in brown-green tones, is gently undulating. The foreground is filled with a clearing of pine bushes, with red flowers growing on the forest floor. The arrangement of the tree trunks appears rhythmic, with larger gaps towards the center where the red-yellow light of the sunset shines through. The sky above the horizon occupies two-thirds of the canvas, with bright and dark clouds drifting above the treetops. In the center of the painting stand two figures dressed in old German attire, facing towards the sunset, on a forest path that diagonally crosses the midground from left to right.
