In a series of 14 paintings, Pissarro explored the Boulevard Montmartre in the heart of Paris. From his room at the Grand Hôtel de Russie, with the Opera behind him, he looked out onto the bustling street where 20,000 carriages passed by daily, alongside expensive shops and the popular Café Tortoni. This painting depicts the Boulevard with the fresh green of the trees in spring.
