Eugène Boudin was familiar with the port city of Honfleur, located across from Le Havre at the mouth of the Seine, since his youth. By emphasizing the wall of the pier, he highlighted the harbor architecture and thus found a modern approach: Boudin presented the harbor as a hub for goods and a stop for travelers, addressing how goods from Rouen were transported to England via Honfleur.
