Claude Monet - Der Tümpel im Schnee (1874)

After returning from London, where Monet sought refuge during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, the artist didn't return to Paris, the city of his years of study. Like many of his artist friends, he moved to one of the smaller towns along the Seine, easily accessible from Paris. In the midday sun, people are walking on the open, snow-covered field near Monet's residence in Argenteuil. Monet captured the carefree moment and the abundance of light, juxtaposing complementary yellow against blue, and orange against violet.
