The title of the painting refers to a weather phenomenon that often occurs around St. Martin's Day on November 11th. During this time, unexpectedly high temperatures can occur even so late in the year. Nevertheless, there can also be ground frost, as Alfred Sisley depicted with the whitish remnants of hoarfrost in the furrows of the path.
