Vincent van Gogh - Wheatfield with cypresses (1889)

  • Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
  • 57,0 million Dollar Privat sale, 1993
  • Number 59 of the most expensive paintings in the world

The painting Wheatfield with cypresses shows golden fields of ripe wheat, dark towering cypresses and light green olive trees. White clouds are visible behind the hills and mountains, swirling in an azure sky. Van Gogh painted the artwork in 1889 when he was allowed to leave the asylum. He was fascinated by the surrounding cypress trees and the impulsive wheatfield. Van Gogh considered the work one of his best summer landscapes and produced two more. One at the same scale that he gave to his brother Theo, and one at a smaller scale that was intended as a gift for his mother and sister.
