Vincent van Gogh - View of the asylum and chapel of Saint-Rémy (1889)
The painting View of the Asylum and Chapel of Saint-Rémy is an oil on canvas artwork by Vincent van Gogh. He painted it in fall of 1889 in Saint-Rémy where he had voluntarily admitted himself to an asylum. Originally, the painting was thought to be a view of the church in Labbevi/le near Auvers where he moved after his stay in the asylum. Today it is thought to bea view of the lunatic asylum and church at Saint-Rémy. It may have belonged to the "Autumn Studies" mentioned in Vincent's letter to his brother Theo of December 7, 1889. The natural, autumn coloured scene occupies most of the painting rather than the architecture of the buildings. Splashes of yellow in the trees and haystacks distract the eye from the overwhelming light blue and green colours.
