Franz Sedlacek (1869-1923) was a German painter. His work is marked by Impressionism and the Art Nouveau style; he also worked in other media such as lithography, woodcuts, oil paintings and etchings. In 1881 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna He studied under Heinrich Deißler, who encouraged his talent with a scholarship to Rome. In 1894 he married Pauline Pappenheim, an amateur actress, but they soon divorced when she became pregnant with their son Pierre. Due to personal problems Sedlacek moved to Munich where he joined the Munich Secession movement. Sedlacek had his first solo exhibition in 1899. In 1905 he exhibited pieces at the Salon d'Automne in Paris there was not much response from critics nor collectors who considered it "too colorful". However it gained influence among the younger artists especially Max Ernst, who exclaimed "The works of this artist have given me a new life."
