Jean-Léon Gérôme was French painter, best known for his Biblical and mythological scenes depicting religious themes. He studied in Paris under Gazeau until 1842, becoming an exhibiter at the Salon de Paris in 1846. From 1850 to 1852 he traveled to Egypt selling paintings and became particularly interested in Islamic art.
This image is a painting by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). The subject matter is Prayer in Cairo, 1865. It was painted while Gérôme was stationed in Egypt as a guard of the palace.
