Claude Lorrain (1605–1682) was born in Nîmes, France and died in Dijon. He lived most of his life in Italy, where he also painted mythological subjects and landscapes that show the influence of Andrea Mantegna, Gaspare Malatesta and Albrecht Dürer. His paintings are characterized by their atmospheric quality, their use of light and colour.
